How to properly promote new (young) websites

A new website is promoted from low competition upwards: first the technical base and indexing, then pages for narrow searches, a Google Business Profile and the first links. The first noticeable results usually arrive after about three months.

In short

  • Week one: Search Console, sitemap.xml, an indexing check and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Start keyword work with long-tail searches; a new domain cannot compete on broad terms yet.
  • One keyword cluster, one landing page with a direct answer and a clear next step.
  • A Google Business Profile and directory listings give the company its first mentions.
  • First noticeable SEO results come after about three months; Google Ads covers enquiries in the meantime.

Why does a new website grow slowly in Google?

A site’s age counts from when a search engine first found and indexed it; the domain registration date matters little. A new site has no history, no links and no user signals. Google has never confirmed a "sandbox", yet in practice new sites need time to build trust signals. Going straight for the most competitive terms in the niche rarely works.

What to do in the first week after launch

  • Verify the site in Google Search Console and submit sitemap.xml.
  • Check robots.txt and meta robots tags; a leftover "noindex" from development is common.
  • Use URL Inspection to request indexing for the homepage and key pages.
  • Connect Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow; ChatGPT search draws on the Bing index among other sources.
  • Install GA4 through Google Tag Manager and set up key events: enquiry, call, messenger click.
  • Check speed and the mobile version in PageSpeed Insights.

What strategy does a new website need?

The strategy starts from competitors and demand. First we look at who ranks for your services, which pages rank and how many links they have. Then we build the keyword set and split it into clusters. For a new site, the priority is searches where big players are absent from the results: service plus city, service plus a qualifier, and the questions clients actually ask.

  • Structure. One landing page per cluster, reachable in two clicks from the homepage through navigation and breadcrumbs.
  • Content. The first paragraph answers the query directly, followed by details, timelines, what the client needs to provide and an FAQ. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT quote pages like these more readily.
  • Internal links. Blog posts link to service pages, and service pages link to related services.
  • Markup. Organization, Service or Product, BreadcrumbList, and FAQPage where there are questions.

A three-month plan for a new website

  1. Month 1. Technical audit and fixes, keyword research and clustering, site structure, optimisation of existing pages, Google Business Profile.
  2. Month 2. New landing pages for long-tail clusters, first articles answering client questions, listings in industry directories.
  3. Month 3. External mentions and links from relevant sites, and page improvements based on Search Console data: where there are impressions but few clicks, we rewrite the title tag and meta description.

After that the work runs in cycles. Search Console shows queries sitting in positions 11 to 20, and those pages get strengthened first.

How to build links to a new website

Carefully and gradually. A sudden spike of paid links to a new domain looks unnatural and can lead to a manual action from Google. Early on, a Google Business Profile, industry directories, mentions from partners and suppliers, articles in trade media and expert answers on relevant platforms are enough.

How long until results?

The first noticeable SEO results usually arrive after about three months: pages get indexed, impressions grow for narrow searches and the first clicks come in. Ranking for competitive terms takes longer and depends on the niche. While organic traffic builds, Google Ads brings enquiries; a campaign can go live within a few working days of receiving access. For a local business, a fast channel is Google Business Profile optimisation.

Visibility in AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) rests on the same base: indexing, clear structure, direct answers and mentions of the company. More on our AI search optimisation page.

Frequently asked questions

How can I promote a new website quickly?

Start with the technical base and indexing, then target long-tail, low-competition searches with dedicated pages. The first noticeable SEO results usually come after about three months; Google Ads runs in parallel for faster enquiries.

Does the Google sandbox exist for new websites?

Google has never confirmed it. In practice, a new site needs time to earn links, mentions and user signals, so it grows more slowly for competitive terms.

What should I do in the first month of promoting a new site?

Connect Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit sitemap.xml, run a technical audit, research keywords, build the landing page structure and complete your Google Business Profile.

Can I buy links for a new website?

A sudden spike of paid links to a new domain is risky and can lead to a penalty. Start with directories, partners, trade media and a Google Business Profile, and build links gradually.

When will a new website start bringing in enquiries?

From SEO, once pages reach the top positions for narrow searches, usually not before three months. From Google Ads, within a few working days of the campaign going live.
