Running marketing promotions: types, mechanics and launch

A marketing promotion is a time-limited offer for customers: a discount, gift, bonus, contest or referral scheme. It pays off when it has a measurable goal, calculated margins, clear rules, its own landing page and a way to track sales.

In short

  • Start with the goal: new customers, repeat purchases, clearing stock or a higher average order.
  • Work the discount out from your margin: how many extra sales keep the promotion out of the red.
  • Publish the full terms: dates, who can take part, how to claim the benefit, limits.
  • Our studio builds a promo landing page within 3 working days after the brief and materials are agreed.
  • Measure results with promo codes, UTM tags, GA4 events and deal statuses in your CRM.

Which promotions suit service businesses?

A salon, clinic, garage or studio has no warehouse, but it does have specialists’ idle hours. Mechanics that fill empty slots and let people try the service work well: a free diagnosis or first check-up, a multi-visit package priced below the sum of visits, a weekday-morning discount, a gift voucher. In B2B, trial formats do better: an audit, a demo or a first month on special terms.

How do you check whether a discount pays off?

A discount comes out of your margin. Example: a product with a 30% margin sold at 10% off loses a third of its profit per unit, so you need to sell roughly one and a half times as many to earn the same.

Before launch, answer three questions:

  1. How many extra sales do you need to break even?
  2. Do you have enough stock, staff and ad budget?
  3. What will bring the customer back at full price afterwards?

If the answers are unclear, build the promotion into your overall marketing plan, where seasonality, category margins and channels are visible.

How to run a promotion: a step-by-step plan

  1. Goal and metric. For example, 200 first orders in a month or a higher average order.
  2. Mechanic and rules. Dates, eligibility, how to claim, product and quantity limits, how prizes are awarded.
  3. Promotion page. A dedicated landing page with the terms, a countdown and a form. We build it within 3 working days after the brief is agreed and materials are received.
  4. Channels. Email to your list, social media, Google Ads and Meta ads, a banner on your site, a Telegram bot message.
  5. Tracking. A promo code per channel, UTM tags, a purchase or lead event in GA4, a promotion tag on the deal in your CRM (HubSpot, Pipedrive).
  6. Bringing people back. Remarketing to visitors who viewed the offer but did not buy, and a follow-up email after purchase.
  7. Results. Revenue, margin, new customers, share who return within 60–90 days.

Which rules matter?

The terms must be available before purchase and identical across every channel: the site, ads, social media and your sales team. The “before” price must be a real price the product was sold at.

  • Collecting phone numbers or emails for entry requires consent to personal data processing and a link to your privacy policy.
  • Prize draws and lottery-style mechanics are regulated separately in most countries, Ukraine included. Have a lawyer review any prize mechanic before launch.
  • Social networks have their own rules. Meta’s promotion guidelines, for example, forbid requiring people to share a post on their personal Facebook timeline to enter.

How do you know the promotion worked?

Look at profit and customer behaviour; revenue alone says little. A good promotion brings customers who buy again. A bad one gives away margin to people who would have bought anyway.

Compare the promotion period with a similar period without it, check the share of orders using promo codes and the average margin. After 2–3 months, see how many new customers made a second purchase. That data becomes the basis for your next promotion.

FAQ

Which promotions work best for an online store?

To acquire customers, a first-purchase bonus in exchange for a sign-up. To raise order value, a gift or free shipping above a threshold. For repeat sales, a loyalty programme.

How long should a promotion run?

Usually from a few days to 2–3 weeks. A short window motivates, but ads and emails need time to reach the audience.

Does a promotion need its own page?

Yes. It holds the terms, deadline and order form, ads point to it, and it makes conversion tracking in GA4 simple.

How do you track sales from a promotion?

Separate promo codes per channel, UTM-tagged links, a purchase event in GA4 and a promotion tag on the deal in your CRM.

Can you run a giveaway on Instagram?

Yes, if the full terms are published and comply with Meta’s rules. Have a lawyer check any prize mechanic.
