How to create ads that sell on Facebook and Instagram

Facebook and Instagram ads that sell are built from four parts: the right campaign objective in Meta Ads Manager, a broad audience with a clear offer, several vertical creatives and accurate lead tracking through Pixel and Conversions API.

In short

  • For leads choose the Leads objective, for website sales choose Sales.
  • In 2026 Meta's algorithm finds the audience itself. Most of the work is creatives and the offer.
  • 9:16 for Reels and Stories is a must, 4:5 for the feed.
  • Pixel plus Conversions API, otherwise the algorithm learns from partial data.
  • Launch takes a few working days after we get access.

Where do you start with Facebook and Instagram ads?

With a business portfolio in Meta Business Suite. It holds the ad account, Facebook Page, Instagram account, Pixel and payment method. Boosting a post from the Instagram app works, but it gives few settings and weak analytics. For sales we build campaigns in Ads Manager.

Before launch we check three things: the domain is verified, website events are set up, and the Page has no advertising restrictions.

Which campaign objective should you choose in Meta Ads Manager?

Ads Manager has six objectives. The objective decides who the algorithm shows your ads to.

ObjectiveWhen to use
AwarenessNew brand, regional reach
TrafficVisits to the website or profile
EngagementMessages in Direct, Messenger, WhatsApp, video views
LeadsRequests through an instant form or a website form
App promotionInstalls and in-app actions
SalesWebsite purchases, product catalogue

A common mistake is choosing Traffic when the business needs leads. The algorithm then brings people who click and rarely leave contact details.

How do you set up audiences in 2026?

Detailed interest targeting works worse than five years ago. Meta has cut the interest list and turns on Advantage+ audience by default: you give suggestions, the algorithm looks for buyers more broadly.

  • Location, language, age: the basic limits.
  • Custom audiences: website visitors, customer lists, followers, video viewers.
  • Lookalike audiences: based on buyers or leads, when there is enough data.

For special ad categories (housing, employment, credit, social issues) Meta restricts targeting by age, gender and location. Plan for this before launch.

Which creatives sell on Facebook and Instagram?

Today the creative is the targeting. The algorithm shows an ad to the people who respond to it.

  1. The first 3 seconds of video: the problem or the result, no long intros.
  2. Vertical 9:16 for Reels and Stories, 4:5 for the feed.
  3. The offer in one line: what the person gets and why now.
  4. Different angles: talking-head video, customer review, product demo, product carousel.
  5. 3–6 creatives per ad set; switch off the weak ones by cost per result.

How do you track leads and sales?

The Pixel misses events because of ad blockers, iOS and cookie banners. Conversions API sends events from the server straight to Meta. Together they give the algorithm complete data to learn from.

Every lead should reach GA4 and the CRM (KeyCRM, HubSpot, Pipedrive) with a source tag. Then you see cost per lead and cost per sale.

What budget do you need and how do you optimise?

The minimum budget depends on the cost per result in your niche. Meta's guideline is about 50 optimisation events per week per ad set to exit the learning phase. If the budget cannot support that, merge ad sets or optimise for an event higher in the funnel.

Leave the campaign alone for the first 3–5 days. Then review CPM, CTR, cost per lead (CPL) and ROAS. Change creatives and offers. Frequent edits to bids and audiences reset learning.

When should you hand ads to a specialist?

When ads are running but leads are few or off-target. When ads need to connect with the website, CRM and sales team. We handle this in targeted advertising on Facebook and Instagram advertising, and often add TikTok advertising for younger audiences. Launch takes a few working days after we get access to the ad account and the website.

FAQ

Which Instagram ad format brings the most leads?

Most often vertical video in Reels and Stories and instant lead forms. Results depend on the niche, so we launch 3–6 creatives and keep those with the lowest cost per lead.

Can I run ads on Instagram only?

Yes. In Ads Manager you can choose manual placements and keep only Instagram. Advantage+ placements, however, often deliver a lower cost per result.

Why do Facebook ads bring no leads?

Typical reasons: Traffic objective instead of Leads, no Pixel or Conversions API, a single creative, a vague offer, slow follow-up on requests.

How long until ads start working?

Launch takes a few working days after access. The learning phase usually lasts about a week, and we draw conclusions after 2–3 weeks.

Do I need a website for Facebook and Instagram ads?

For leads an instant form or messages can be enough. For sales and accurate analytics you need a landing page with Pixel and Conversions API.
