The importance of redesign in website promotion and the stages of work on it

A redesign helps promotion when it fixes specific problems: the site is awkward on a phone, loads slowly or loses leads. Rankings survive when page URLs, texts and meta tags stay in place or 301 redirects are set up.

In short

  • The trigger for a redesign is data: falling leads, speed, share of mobile visitors.
  • We start with an audit in Search Console, GA4 and Microsoft Clarity.
  • Before launch we build a URL map: every old address gets a match.
  • A website takes up to 10 working days, a store up to 15, after the brief and materials.
  • For the first weeks after launch we watch indexing and rankings.

What types of redesign are there?

TypeWhat changesSEO risk
VisualColours, fonts, images, spacingLow if texts and URLs stay
FunctionalNavigation, sections, forms, filtersMedium: links and structure change
TechnicalCode, CMS, hosting, speedMedium: meta tags and redirects can be lost
FullEverything at once, often a new platformHigh without a URL map and 301 redirects

When does a website need a redesign?

We decide by data; there is no fixed "every N years" rule. Typical triggers:

  • the site is hard to read and tap on a phone, while more than half of visitors are mobile;
  • Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) in Search Console are in the red;
  • leads have dropped while traffic stayed the same;
  • services and products have changed, but the site still shows the old ones;
  • the CMS no longer receives updates or security fixes.

Google indexes sites by their mobile version. If the mobile version is cut down, rankings suffer on every device.

How does a redesign affect SEO?

A good redesign improves user signals: faster pages, a shorter path to a request, longer reading time. A bad one wipes out what was built. Typical losses: URLs changed without redirects, texts removed from the home page, titles and descriptions lost, or a staging site blocked in robots.txt pushed live with the block still in place. That is why we start by exporting every page with impressions over the last 16 months from Search Console: it is the basis of the URL map.

What are the stages of a redesign?

  1. Audit. Search Console: which pages and queries get impressions. GA4: where leads come from. Microsoft Clarity: click maps and session recordings.
  2. URL map. A list of every address with traffic. Each old URL stays or gets a 301 redirect to its new address.
  3. Prototype. Structure and the path to a request on the home page, services and product cards.
  4. Design. We keep or evolve the brand style; recognition matters to returning clients.
  5. Development on a staging domain. We block it from indexing and move texts, meta tags and markup.
  6. Launch. We lift the indexing block, switch on redirects and submit sitemap.xml in Search Console.
  7. Monitoring. For two to four weeks we track indexing errors, rankings and leads.

Launch-day checklist

  • Every old URL with traffic opens or returns a 301 to its new address, with no redirect chains.
  • robots.txt does not block indexing, and pages carry no noindex.
  • Titles, descriptions and H1s are carried over; canonical tags point to the new URLs.
  • sitemap.xml is updated and submitted in Search Console.
  • GA4 and GTM run on every page; form requests arrive and are counted as events.
  • Forms, phone links and messenger buttons are tested on a phone.
  • Home and key pages are checked in PageSpeed Insights.

How long does a redesign take?

In our experience, redesigning a business card or corporate site takes up to 10 working days, and an online store up to 15 working days, after the brief is agreed and materials arrive. Projects with a platform change, thousands of products to migrate or integrations are estimated after the brief. We choose the stack for the task: WordPress, WooCommerce, MODX, Next.js or Laravel.

What do we need from the client?

Access to the site, hosting, Search Console and GA4. A list of what you like and dislike about the current site. Up-to-date services, prices, photos and case studies. One person who approves the mock-ups.

After launch the site needs promotion: see SEO services.

FAQ

Will rankings drop after a redesign?

Short fluctuations in the first weeks are common. If URLs, texts and meta tags are kept or 301 redirects are in place, rankings usually return.

How often should a site be redesigned?

Based on data; there is no fixed interval. Triggers include a poor mobile version, slow loading, fewer leads and outdated services on the site.

Can the design be updated without changing the CMS?

Yes. Visual and functional redesigns are often done on the same platform. A CMS change is needed when the current one is no longer updated or cannot handle the tasks.

What must be kept during a redesign?

Page URLs, texts that bring traffic, titles and descriptions, structured data, GA4 and GTM tags, conversion goals and request forms.

How much does a website redesign cost?

It depends on the number of page templates, features, the amount of content to migrate and whether the platform changes. We quote after the audit.

Do we need a new logo and brand style?

It is optional. A recognisable style is better kept and refreshed, so clients recognise you on the new site.
