The Fine Points of Lead Generation: Where Leads Get Lost

Lead generation means finding potential customers who leave a contact: a form, call or message. It is a chain of ads or search, a landing page, a form and a fast sales reply. Leads get lost at any link.
In short
- A lead is a person who left a contact. They become a customer after sales follows up.
- Channels: Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, SEO, Google Business Profile.
- The key metrics are cost per lead (CPL) and cost per sale.
- Every lead is recorded in GA4 and the CRM, or you cannot see which channel works.
- Launching ads takes a few working days once we have access.
How does a lead generation funnel work?
A funnel is the path from first contact to a lead. Some people drop off at every step, and that is normal. The task is to find the step where more people leave than should.
- Impression. A person with the right need sees an ad, post or search snippet.
- Click. The headline and offer match the query. Metric: CTR.
- Landing page. Within seconds the visitor knows they are in the right place. Metrics: bounce rate and pages per session.
- Lead. A form, call, Telegram or WhatsApp message. Metric: page conversion rate.
- Follow-up. Sales replies quickly and turns the lead into a meeting or payment. Metric: share of leads that become deals.
Which channels bring leads?
- Google Ads search. People look for the service themselves. The warmest traffic, with a higher click price.
- Performance Max and Merchant Center. For stores: products in Shopping, YouTube, Gmail.
- Meta Ads. Facebook and Instagram ads, including lead forms that do not need a website visit.
- TikTok Ads. Reach among younger audiences, works well with a video offer.
- SEO. Leads with no per-click cost. First visible results come in about 3 months.
- Google Business Profile. Calls and directions for local businesses.
Which metrics should you track?
- CTR: share of impressions that become clicks. Shows whether the ad catches attention.
- CPC and CPM: price per click and per thousand impressions.
- Page conversion rate: share of visitors who leave a lead.
- CPL: the cost of one lead, ad spend divided by the number of leads.
- Cost per sale: spend divided by paid orders. This is the figure that matters to the business.
A cheap lead that never turns into a sale costs more than an expensive lead that does.
Why do ads run while leads do not arrive?
Most often the leads exist but are invisible or get lost. We check in order:
- Does the form submit? Does the email reach an inbox someone reads?
- How many fields does the form have? Each extra field lowers conversion. A name and one contact are usually enough.
- How fast does sales reply? A lead answered the next day has often gone to a competitor.
- Does the page match the ad? The ad promises "repairs in 3 days" while the page shows a general company text.
- Does the site work on phones? Most leads now come from mobile.
How do you track leads?
We set up Google Tag Manager and GA4: a form submit event plus phone and messenger clicks. Key events go to Google Ads and Meta so their algorithms learn from real leads. Microsoft Clarity records sessions, showing where people get stuck.
Form leads flow into a CRM such as KeyCRM, HubSpot or Pipedrive. There you see which channel brought the customer and how the deal ended. Without this you cannot tell which channel pays off.
Where do you start?
Start with an audit of what already exists: ads, page, form, analytics. Often fixing the form and tracking is enough to see the real picture. Then launch or rebuild the campaigns. A launch usually takes a few working days after we get access.

FAQ
What is a lead?
A lead is a potential customer who has left a contact: a website form, a call or a messenger message. They become a customer once a deal closes.
How do you calculate cost per lead (CPL)?
Divide ad spend for the period by the number of leads from that channel. To judge payback, also calculate cost per sale.
Which lead generation channel works best?
It depends on the niche. When people actively search for the service, Google Ads search and SEO. When demand has to be created, Meta Ads and TikTok Ads. Compare channels by cost per sale.
Why do ads run but no leads come in?
Usually the lead itself gets lost: the form fails, emails go to the wrong inbox, sales replies late or the page does not match the ad.
How long does it take to launch lead generation?
Ads launch within a few working days after access. A landing page for ads takes up to 3 working days after the brief is agreed and materials arrive.
