Website development: where to start

Start with the outcome your website should support: take an order, book a customer or help someone choose a service. Describe the visitor, their question and the action that completes the task.

Prepare a brief

Cover products, service areas, languages, content owners and enquiry handling. Add references and explain what you find useful in each one. Record constraints on timing, budget and support.

Create a page list and a prototype of the main journey. A clickable Figma prototype lets you review navigation before implementation.

Define data and integrations

  • Which fields the customer completes and who receives the enquiry.
  • Where products, prices and stock records are maintained.
  • Which systems exchange data and how failures are detected.
  • Who can edit content and manage permissions.

If you need a CRM connection, check KeyCRM or SalesDrive integrations against your workflows. Choose the website platform after these requirements are agreed.

Define the first release

Separate launch requirements from later improvements. Give each essential journey an acceptance check: enquiry submission, notification delivery, content editing and use on a phone.

Include a backup, owner access, search accessibility checks and a support owner in the launch plan. For an existing site, add a URL preservation and content migration plan. Review the estimate whenever the agreed scope changes.
