What to agree on before ordering a website

Agree on the deliverable and how you will test it before commissioning a website. The phrase “turnkey website” leaves too much scope undefined.

Record the scope

List pages, languages, forms and integrations. Assign responsibility for writing, images, catalogue migration and approvals. Describe what visitors and staff should be able to do with each feature.

Validate the CMS choice with an editing demonstration. WordPress, for example, provides publishing, media and user management, while additional features depend on extensions. Check compatibility and support for the actual component set.

Cover the key agreements

  • Stages, review deadlines and responsible people on both sides.
  • Estimate contents and the process for pricing new requests.
  • Ownership of the domain, accounts, source files and licences.
  • Acceptance criteria, defect fixes and ongoing support scope.

Check before launch

Test the main journeys on a phone and computer. Confirm notification delivery, complete enquiry data, working links and independent page editing. Ask for a backup restoration demonstration on a test environment.

When replacing an existing website, prepare a URL inventory and migration plan using Google's guidance. After launch, assign responsibility for enquiries, updates and service renewals.
